Mwali

Hand carved spondylus shell from Papua New Guinea circa late 19th C. Originally a ceremonial or Kula item used as currency / barter, a system ubiquitous in the Pacific rim. The age and wear is evident and the shell itself imbued with ‘manna’, a power and spiritual significance accrued over time and with frequency of use.
